From Nate...

The Legend of the Pumker-melon

One year, my Pawpaw planted the 2 rows of pumpkins next to 2 rows of watermelons. We learned a very valuable lesson that year. As pumpkins and watermelons are both melons, they have the ability to crossbreed. This happend and the fruit that was produced was smooth and round like that of a watermelon, but had orange strips of color along with green. When we cut open the odd melons, the inside shared traits from both as well but was not sweet, more of a bitter taste. We did not know what to do with them, and so let them rot on the vine, and from then on always have planted watermelon and pumpkins on opposite sides of the garden.
